Rikki Dewes

Although Rikki’s parents and teachers were keen for him to go to University, Rikki began labouring at aged 16.  “I knew I needed a trade. Something I could be proud of.”

Over four years at Atlas Fibrous Plasters, Rikki has completed National Certificates in PlasterBoard (Fixing), PlasterBoard (Finishing) and Fibrous Plaster (Manufacture), with Fibre Cement Board Linings (fixing and finishing) on the way. Rikki’s next challenge is a National Diploma NCEA Level 6 in construction management and quantity surveying.

Competing at last year’s AWCI Apprentice Challenges was a career highlight, winning Rikki a trip to Darwin, Australia to compete against Australian tradies. “I was fortunate enough to win first place in NZ and the Best Apprentice Award in Australia!” Rikki’s parents are very proud, and Rikki and his partner have just bought their first home.
